SELF AMALGAMATING
TAPES
A range of tapes which amalgamate (bond together) when applied
under tension as an insulation wrap. They become a homogeneous, void-free mass
without need for external heat or pressure.
The main applications are for high voltage electrical insulation, moisture proofing
and corrosion prevention for telecommunication and other industrial uses.
The tapes are flexible and versatile in application. They can be easily applied
by hand, contouring closely to irregular shapes and bends to form a permanent
insulation layer or waterproofing barrier.
The life of the tapes exposed out of doors in the UK is expected to be several
years. In enclosed locations, such as cables, the durability should be at least
equal to that of the cables. Where tape may be subject to abrasion or exposure
to weather an external covering with a high quality pPVC tape is recommended.
The most important tapes out of an extensive range are:
250l PIB Self Amalgamating
Tape
For jointing/splicing and repair of a wide range of power and distribution cables
up to 46kV. Used by postal and telecommunication authorities in conjunction
with pPVC insulation tapes for making watertight seals, both above and below
ground. Tapes can be applied for protection against corrosion on metal pipe
work and waterproofing of electrical components.
2515/25l7
EPR Self Amalgamating Tape
For jointing/splicing and repair of a wide range of solid dielectrical power
cables up to 69kV. Also used for insulating and waterproofing electrical components
and connections at lower voltages. Can be used in conjunction with pPVC insulation
tape.
